For the first time in history, Yale’s Rising Star award goes to Russia

The Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance at the Yale School of Management (New Haven, Conn.) announced on June 16 the recipients of its third annual Rising Star of Corporate Governance Award.

This award recognizes global corporate governance professionals under the age of 40 who are making their mark as outstanding analysts, experts, activists, or managers.

Alexander Ikonnikov, Chairman of the Independent Directors Association in Russia, was one of the ten winners of this prestigious international award this year.

“We have the privilege to recognize young and upcoming corporate governance professionals from around the world through this Rising Star award,” said Ira M. Millstein, Senior Associate Dean for Corporate Governance at the Yale School of Management. “We are entering into a new era of corporate governance and this year’s honorees are among the next generation of leaders who will help define it.”

There were ten winners from eight different countries, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, the U.K., Jordan, Singapore, the U.S. and Russia, who received this recognition.

The recipients were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee of leaders from the Millstein Center, the International Corporate Governance Network, the Open Compliance and Ethics Group, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges based on criteria such as past accomplishments and thought leadership, future projects and endeavors, reputation among existing industry leaders, and potential to influence the industry in the future.

Commenting on this event, Alexander Ikonnikov said: “This award speaks for what has been done in Russia and the future potential of my country to foster good governance. The Independent Directors Association will continue to promote best business practices in corporate governance, assisting Russian businesses to be more effective, competitive and attractive for investors.”

The Independent Directors Association (IDA) is a not-for-profit organization that brings together Russian and international corporate directors and experts in corporate governance. Its mission is to assist Russian companies in boosting their efficiency through the best practices of directors’ performance. Its aim is to develop and maintain corporate ethics of independent directors.
